In this case, it’s the story of J, a biracial (Latino and Jewish) transgender boy who is struggling to become comfortable with his gender identity while coming out to his family and friends.J’s story features many aspects of “typical” young adult novels—the search for identity, the need for a sense of belonging, emerging values that conflict with those of parents, romance, the confusion of adolescent sexuality, the pressures of high school. J, however, also copes with the challenges of a gender identity that doesn’t match his physical body. Further frustrating matters, J has few resources he can use to educate himself about his predicament—until he runs away from home and encounters a marginalized community of others who, like him, are gender variant. Identifying the resources that can help him leads J to confront new issues—accepting and understanding those resources, finding a way to make them work for him, and developing the confidence to share his gender identity with those he loves.Although some of the plot developments feel as though they’ve been lifted directly from some standardized paradigm of the challenges faced by most trans* youth (running away from home, confusion over sexual orientation, asserting control over one’s physical development, securing the resources for hormone therapy, finding a community, enduring bullying), Beam has woven these elements into a credible story about a protagonist who is complex, dynamic, and likeable. J is by no means perfect, but it is nearly impossible not to root for his success.

J has never had the easiest of lives growing up: his best friend – his only friend – will focus more on herself than their friendship, kids in his public New York high school harass him, his parents aren’t a constant presence, and he’s a guy born in a girl’s body. When J’s best friend and crush Melissa turns her back on him, J decides it’s time to start truly becoming the man he wishes people would see him as, whether that means hormone treatment or just truly accepting himself.I am J is a unique, ultra-modern coming-of-age novel whose highlights include a dynamic protagonist set against a vivid, real world with real-world issues.J’s struggle truly became a riveting part of this novel, and the way his struggle to become the gender he desired became a mission that readers came to cheer for when J succeeded and sighed when he had to take a step back. Clearly, the FTM (female-to-male) transition process was well researched, and J’s hopes for his world to accept him as a boy come to represent all the struggles people face for others to accept them. The reader gets to see each stage: the unsure pre-transition J who hides his body with layers of shirts, the J who is sure of his gender and physically projects that to the world (and passes sometimes), and the J who begins the physical alterations of the transition. It gives a nearly complete curve and leaves the reader a bit more informed about the fascinating life. But, luckily, the book didn’t singularly define J by being a transgender person: he’s resilient, loyal, open to learn, and has a big heart. Also, he’s human. His relationships aren’t defined by being good or bad, but go through patches of both, namely with his mother, Melissa, and the friends he meets along the way.Besides the issues it brings up, J’s world is also wonderfully painted simply in terms of the techniques the author uses. J is a multi-racial child, and many of his friends are as he is, so the diversity of New York is explored. As well, J’s rougher neighborhood and life was an interesting choice, and the reader not only got to learn about transgender life but also about a less read area of New York. The dialogue is top notch and completely realistic. There’s swearing, idioms, and just the syntax of the sentences make it so each line could seriously be said by real people, really pushing the story’s credibility. The writing itself was very frank, and the story didn’t leave out bits and pieces because someone might feel uncomfortable. It leaves the reader satisfied by the end, and a bit more empathetic toward the transgender people community.In conclusion, if you are looking for a great piece of fiction including a well-made protagonist and a setting that isn’t as heavily explored, and/or want to dabble into the still-on-the-rare-side LGBTQ fiction, I Am J is a great choice.

It is a rare thing to find a book that truly reflects the transgender experience in a fashion that appeals to young adults. "I Am J" does this, and does it well.There are many autobiographical (non-fiction) books or memoirs that report one individual's experience. This fictional account of a 17 year old FtM transsexual delves deep into this young man's psyche as he struggles with his own awareness, identity, and relationships. Author Cris Beam has drawn upon her years of experience in the transgender community to present a character - J - who represents feelings and experiences of many gender variant teens of both assigned genders.While classmates and family struggle to understand his attitude and behaviors, J is struggling with his awareness of himself. Declaring early in his senior year of high school that he is male, not female, is not a spur of the moment decision; he has known for some time. As with most teens, he is trying to discover who he is as a person and who he will be as an adult. Compounded with that is his anguish over his relationships with his parents and friends; he is trying to express himself while in constant fear of rejection by those he loves.No one who is not transgender can truly understand the emotional stress of accepting oneself and the fear of sharing that knowledge with loved ones. In "I Am J" author Cris Beam has portrayed this superbly.

I am J is the story of transgender youth. J, born Jennifer, hates his name and has always thought of himself as a boy, despite being a girl. He struggles with this and spends most of the early part of the novel in a very dark place.I am J is a coming out tale that is more complicated then just a coming out tale. The main storyline deals with J's coming out, how his family reacts and his first few steps toward transition. The cast of characters have their own issues, his best friend Melissa is a cutter. His parent's marriage is in trouble and they are both flawed individuals, his new trans friend Chanelle has her own very restricted view of gender and the roles boys and girls must play. This all adds up to a much deeper and more realistic novel, one that is about a trans-individual who is coming out, but doesn't read like a one dimensional coming out story. Very good book and a very easy read.

I am happy with the seriousness of the book. This book is written in a very formal, mathematical style. I am happy with the seriousness of the book, and the breadth of material it covers. I like that it organizes material by network models.What I really dislike about this book is that it provides very little intuition for the algorithms it presents. The book will pose a problem, then present a distributed algorithm that solves the problem, with a proof of correctness. It would be very helpful if the book presented naive attempts at solutions, explaining why they didn't work, and how the final solution addresses and avoids those failures.This would be helpful because with many of the algorithms Prof. Lynch presents, I waste a lot of time trying to figure out why a simpler approach wouldn't work. I usually do convince myself why the presented solution truly addresses failings of my naive solutions, but it takes a long time. A second reason this would be helpful is that it would help explain the presented algorithms; I spend a lot of time scratching my head, trying to figure out how a complicated algorithm works. If I could see a simpler, easier to understand, but not entirely correct "partial solution", I could grok that, and then slowly understand a series of evolutionary steps as we improve that algorithm toward a full solution.This makes the book difficult for use for self-study. In a classroom setting, I think you could get more of the intuition from a lecturer, or from having someone to ask questions too. That said, I do feel a great sense of achievement as I make progress through the book; Prof. Lynch doesn't rob you of a sense of discovery by taking you through every baby step. But I also would be happier if there were left blanks to fill in and if I could make faster progress through the text.I would still recommend the book; this does appear to be the definitive text, and reading it I feel like I am (slowly) gaining a mastery of this subject. My feedback is really more motivated by a general frustration with many texts written in what I feel to be an overly formal, unintuitive style.

In this book, Nancy A. Lynch provides a very thorough account of the theory of distributed algorithms, using elementary (if sometimes intricate) methods based on I/O automata. Algorithms are presented both informally, and formally using automata. Along the way, a number of bounds and impossibility results are presented. Each chapter includes a useful section providing pointers to the research literature, additional reading, and further bibliographic notes.The book is divided into three sections: synchronous algorithms, asynchronous algorithms, and partially synchronous algorithms (asynchronous algorithms with timing constraints). The first two sections are further divided into shared memory algorithms and network algorithms. Each section is interesting in its own right, of course, but the early sections introduce theoretical tools that are exploited throughout. The final section, on partially synchronous algorithms, was more of a survey than the previous sections. This is perhaps inevitable, because partially synchronous algorithms are a research topic, and not nearly as much is known as is known in the case of purely asynchronous algorithms.One disappointment from my point of view is that there was no use of formal methods (temporal logic, process logics, and such). Instead, proofs generally used straightforward arguments using simulation arguments, invariant assertions, and the like). I would have liked to have seen how formal methods could have been brought to bear on the problems discussed in this book. On the other hand, this is also an advantage because the mathematical prerequisites are kept to a minimum. That does not, however mean this book is an easy read. It can be quite challenging at times.

About the Author

Massimo Bottura is the chef patron of Osteria Francescana, a three Michelin star restaurant based in Modena, Italy. Massimo grew up in Modena and developed an interest in cooking from a young age after watching his mother, grandmother and aunt in the kitchen preparing family meals. In 1986 he left a law degree to open his first restaurant and subsequently went on to develop his love of food with stages for Alain Ducasse at Louis XV in Monte Carlo and Ferran Adriá at elbulli. I bought this book for my bf, who is a cook. He is loving it, he says is amazing, and very inpirational. He reads it over and over again. I must say it probably is a amazing book for anyone who loves cooking, but understands that this book gives away a lot of recipes that you won't be able to cook at home, but this could just inspire you to cook with love and passion

I love this book. It's best read as an exploration of Massimo's philosophy behind different tasting dinners and less an instructional manual on recreating dishes from his restaurant. One does need some advanced equipment and ingredients (sous vide, chamber vacuum, NO2 foamer, etc.) to pull off many of the dishes.

This book is gorgeous with imaginative recipes. This book is not for the average home cook, but for those who are inclined to take up the challenge of cooking like a professional. The recipes do require some special equipment, and ingredients, but if you are up to challenge, they are delicious.

A very well written and engaging book. Bottura mixes regional history with the tale of his Osteria Francescana, as well as with personal vignettes. I have been honored to eat at his restaurant twice, and after reading his book, I can not wait to return to it. This handsomely illustrated monograph is a must for all lovers of innovative cooking. He is obviously a good chef but this book is more about him. If you are interested in how he thinks, go for it. If you want to create his food, buy a magnifying glass because the recipes are all in the back of the book in very very small print!! Creators obviously didn’t think Cooking was important to the reader.

I don't know who this book is for. The author maybe, as it's a gigantic ego trip. The recipes are in the back printed in 2 pt type, so clearly nobody expects you to actually follow them. Even if you could substitute ingredients for the hundreds of those you could never find. I used to have a lot of respect for Mossimo. But this genuflection to self is more than slightly irritating.

First I must say after 15 years as a professional chef and having read hundreds of books, THIS is one that is so fascinating I had to write my first review. I had the experience of eating this man's food last summer at his restaurant in Modena. The bread was by far the best I've ever tasted, far better than even chef Joel Robuchon's which speaks volumes. Moving into dinner, I was not prepared for the meal to come. Some courses were revolutionary, life changing really. Others were confusing and left me questioning the chef's motives. If I had only read this book first I am certain it would have been a different experience. That's what this book does. It goes into detail, the conceptualizing and philosophy being every dish. I've never read a book that is all about the ideology first with the recipes to follow. It's an exceptionally refreshing way to read a cookbook. I've relished having something like this. To look at how this man goes about the creative process. I'll admit, at first I sceptical. Could he really have taken all of these inspirations to create these dishes? Or, did he simply dig for stories to support their creation. I believe the first. You either believe in Massimo completely or simply not at all. That being said, yes these recipes are extrodinarlily creative and some call for devices such as a rotary evaporator, etc. Not to mention the ingredients indigenous to his homeland of Modena Italy he is able to procure. He was doing so many things that later began trending in NYC and the rest of the world. Simply put, if you're interested in how an artistic chef goes about creating dishes, look no further. Thank you Massimo for your work! To all you chef's out there, BUY THIS BOOK!

This book changed my life. I wasn't a reader in my twenties. I picked this up just to pass the time (pooping) and I became captivated as McWilliams shattered one preconceived notion after another in my mind. And it was SO entertaining. Even the footnotes are fun. I had no idea what I was getting into... What a tremendous book.He made me a reader. What a tragedy that I never got to enjoy more books of this type out of this great mind...And on one of the last pages, he mentions the word "libertarian"... and that changed the course of my philosophy for the rest of my life. I owe this man and his book a great deal. I hope his loved ones know how profound an effect Peter had on peoples' lives.

Why do we have laws against consensual crimes anyway? Mostly because of Puritanical, anachronistic religious edicts (don't masturbate, don't have sex outside marriage, don't have non-procreative intercourse, don't work on the Sabbath, dedicate yourself to the deity held in esteem by your society, don't drink to excess (or not at all, in Muslim societies), and so on).Puritans are a case in point. They opposed cockfighting, not because of the suffering it caused to the poor animals, but because of the pleasure it generated for its human participants. Attempting to legislate (or force out through cultural pressures) the natural impulse to have fun (so long as no one is being hurt against their will). This hasn't worked in Utah because for one thing, women aren't being stoned for refusing to marry crusty old senior citizens as their alleged prophet did (as is the case in Saudi Arabia, Iran, et al). The proliferation of the Internet has also eviscerated any hope for this, with Utah being the No. 1 US state for pornography consumption.Tragically, McWilliams died in 2000, murdered by the "honourable" Judge George King who refused him access to medical marijuana (Peter drowned on his own vomit in his bathtub) to treat AIDS-related symptoms.The most harmful laws against consensual crimes today are without question the laws on drugs. As Peter mentions, if crack cocaine or heroin cost $5 a dose, no one would be murdered or mugged to feed the habits of addicts. Not only this, but it would severely undercut one of the most lucrative sources of income for terrorist organisations such as Al-Qaeda and JI, who love cash transactions and untraceable, untaxed profits. Controlled, regulated drugs would remove the allure of "rebelling against the system" that the decades-long, counterproductive War on Drugs has led to. On a related note, vast economic benefits would also be garnered by granting marriage equality across all US states.Criminalising acts that harm no one also undercuts the respect that all democratic citizens should have for the law. Consensual crimes, by definition, are not reported by the so-called "victims" (an unctuously condescending label in itself, insofar as it pertains to these "crimes"). They are only reported through sting operations, directed police efforts and/or bribes to family/friends to rat out the "perp." Not only does this constitute an egregious violation of privacy, but it discriminates against those who cannot pay through the nose (no pun intended) for high-end lawyers to drag things out, deceive juries and judges, or all of the above in efforts to let them off the hook. And if you trust the police not to take bribes, think again. Many cops are willing to take money and turn a blind eye to drug kingpins and those who will supplement their income. Very few are willing to get shot in a useless attempt to arrest a druglord (who will be replaced in a heartbeat). Moreover, poverty pushes the indigent into the drug trade more than anything else. Don't believe me? Read Freakonomics, an excellent dissection of how humans respond to incentives. In a nutshell, the drug business is high-risk, high-reward. It certainly provides a higher life expectancy than Death Row, given the length of the appeals process nowadays.And let's say we turn the War on Drugs into a military venture, like the War on Terror. Would the United States actually emerge victorious? This book made me see the wisdom and efficiency in not worrying about what other people are doing.I like the way Peter McWilliams writes. It's conversational rather that just turgid fact-citing. It's the kind of book that I can pick up, turn to a random page and read something new and want to read more. Even McWilliams said that no one needs to read the whole book.With all the ground the book covers there are places within that are rather flimsy. The topic of smoking was a little off base and contradicted the premise, for example. I don't care if people smoke. It's not an affront to me. I think smoking bans are counterproductive and only serve as masturbatory fodder for those who support them as if they're superheroes saving lives. With that ethanol bath such people are about to introduce their livers to, banning smoking in bars is absurd.Nah. EMT crews save lives. Doctors save lives. Firefighters and police officers save lives. And so on. This book got me thinking about that activist mindset that I realized that you can't force anyone to do something that they don't want to do and vice versa. Most of the time the activists are seen as the busybody snoops with nothing better to do but to annoy people.Humans are human. Sometimes humans make mistakes. And from those mistakes humans learn. And that learning process can be downright ugly and brutal (see various "Darwin Awards" books for examples). I say let the humans learn the hard way. Certainly, in a world full of alleged "grown adults", we can use less babysitters.I think people should own up to their own actions. It's the essence of personal responsibility that this book makes abundantly clear.

About the Author
Andrew Gahan is a leading industry expert in next generation consoles and digital gaming. His roles have included Senior Artist, Lead Artist, Art Manager, Art Director, Art Outsource Manager, and Producer. Andrew is an expert in all gaming tools for commercial game development, including: 3ds Max, Maya, Photoshop, XSI, Gen Head, Z Brush, Mud Box, and Poly-boost (as well as other 3ds max plug-ins). During this time Andrew has worked on 14 standalone published games as well as sequential spin-off products; as well as developing a number of military training systems for the Warrior - Armoured Fighting Vehicle, Harrier and Tornado aircraft. In the last decade Andrew has been involved in recruitment and development of artists, including theoretical and practical training. Andrew has been a freelance consultant helping companies to develop and improve tools and applications that are used by artists in the digital gaming industry. Andrew is currently a visiting speaker and advisor at Liverpool John Moore University for the MA digital games course; and is an external advisor at the University of Bolton, supporting the development of their forthcoming 3D related courses. Andrew has judged the Independent Games Festival for the past 2 years. He has been a visiting speaker at Liverpool John Moore University since 2005, and will also be a speaker at the University of Bolton for the forthcoming 3D Games Modeling course.
