Sir Cumference and the First Round Table (A Math Adventure), by Cindy Neuschwander

Review

"One of King Arthur's knights attempts to design a table around which all of the knights can sit. With his wife, Lady Di of Ameter, and his son, Radius, Sir Cumference experiments with different shapes. Finally, a fallen tree inspires a round table. Geehan's illustrations, particularly the diagrams, help readers understand the geometry. Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi, Sir Cumference and the Great Knight of Angleland, and Sir Cumference and the Sword in the Cone provide similarly playful introductions to additional topics."—School Library Journal"Students already familiar with shape principles will get the most out of this punny medieval story in which Sir Cumference, his wife Lady Di of Ameter, and their son Radius try to help King Arthur create the perfect table for his knights. Other Sir Cumference titles deal with angles, the number Pi, and three dimensional shapes."—Booklinks

My 4 year olds love this book! It's a fun story and has a nice recap at the end that makes it easy for kids to remember diameter, circumference and radius. But, I was happily surprised to discover that the book covers much more than circles. In the early attempts at making a table all can fit around, they cover some pretty cool things:-- cutting a rectangle in 1/2 to make it a square-- cutting a square on the diagonal to make a parallelogram-- octagons-- ovalsIt was a great book, made better by the addition of these other cool shape concepts. The plot moves fast enough that it's not boring at all, and teaches math in a fun and memorable way.

I used this book as a teaching tool to end-of-year 4th-Grade students as an introduction to Circumference, Diameter, and Radius, something they will study more in depth in 5th Grade. I put the book on a document camera so students could see the larger-than-life illustrations while I read aloud the story. They loved it. I think any age students like to be read to and they are never too old for a picture book. More important: Anything that can help students remember concepts earns accolades from me! The book got its best review the next day as we were continuing our Math lessons. As students were recounting terminology, I found they were using elements of the book to do so. I heard: "The measurement across a circle is ... Lady Di of Ameter, Diameter." And, What is radius? "Oh yeah, their son, Radius, was about half as tall as his mom Di of Ameter, so the radius goes from one point on the circle to the center point." The only reason I don't give it a full 5 stars is that I thought it was a little lengthy to use as an aide to a lesson. It took more time than I wanted, but it probably was well worth the time.

Such a terrific way to introduce math concepts to kids. I love all things King Arthur and Math, so imagine my joy at finding this for my son. It's a very well designed and expressed book. Planning to buy the others in the series.

My 8 yr old son loved it! Read it in one sitting and I usually have to fight with him to get him to read anything! Cute story. Fun play on words. Made it easy to understand the mathematical terminology.

I work with a lot of kids that have reading comprehension problems abd have a hard time comprehending math concepts. In my math class this story helps them place what circumference, diameter, and radius.

This book is just too fun. It teaches some geometry concepts through a silly medieval story. No violence or scary stuff. I actually love reading the book because it's pretty silly and clever. I am not a huge fan of the artwork, but it's certainly not bad. My son is 4 and he likes this book too, but probably not as much as I do :)

Granddaughter enjoyed it.

Such a clever book on the discovery of circumference. It helps my students make a connection to circle concepts and ideas.
